Swimming Pool Pumps

The muscle behind the water movement. What makes your water move from the pool, through the skimmer, plumbing and piping, filter and all the rest of the equipment? The power of your pump.

Ranging anywhere from 1/2 to 3 horsepower or more, pumps vary is size, shape, color, and manufacturer but they perform the same basic function. They have a motor which turns an impeller which draws the water into the pump pot, through the basket, then sends the water up into the filter, which then goes back into the pool.

Here is a diagram of all of the major pump parts.

Make sure your pump pot is full of water at all times while the motor is running. If it runs out of water, even for a few minutes, it could warp the plastic pieces (impeller, seal plate, basic - even the pump pot itself!!!). If the pump runs too long without water, even the motor can burn out, requiring a complete replacement.

If your pump is making a strange, loud, or whining noise, consult your local service technician for repairs.
