Pool & Spa Heater Selection Guide

Selecting the proper heater for your swimming pool can sometimes be a daunting task. We hope to make it somewhat easier.

Pool Heaters
First, you need to determine your pool's surface area in square feet (Length of the Pool x Width of the Pool). Then in the table below, locate the surface area equal to or greater than the pool's surface area, read to the top and select the appropriate heater BTU size. The temperature differences noted are there for your reference and comparison in heater sizes.

Tables are based on a 3 1/2 mile per hour (MPH) wind velocity and elevation of up to 2,000 feet above sea level.

Spa Heaters
Determine your spa capacity in gallons (surface area x average depth x 7.4).

The reference tables list the time required in minutes to raise the temperature of the spa/hot tub by 30 degrees F. Locate your spa/hot tub size in gallons and then select the desired time to raise the water temperature 30 degrees F. Read to the top and select the appropriate heater BTU size.

Note: Heat losses and/or heat absorbed by spa walls or other objects will add to heat-up time.

Spa sizing is based on an insulated and covered spa. Always cover your spa or hot tub when not in use to minimize heat loss and evaporation.
